Partnership between APSACS and TeachAIDS

What is TeachAIDS? Spun out of Stanford University in 2009, and recognized as an innovation that would “change the world” by MIT Technology Review, TeachAIDS is asocial venture that creates breakthrough software to solve persistent problems in HIV prevention around the world. Used in more than 70 countries, with 250+ partners, TeachAIDS provides the most effective HIV education for free.

The TeachAIDS model has been identified as an innovation poised to change the face of health education.

Identified as the Indian state yielding the highest HIV stigma, it was no surprise when countless HIV positive children were expelled across Andhra Pradesh. News of this tragedy propelled an intense public debate that revealed the lack of sound, culturally-appropriate learning materials.

Shortly after this incident, TeachAIDS and the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) partnered together to develop and launch comprehensive educational materials across this state.

Much like a celebrated movie release, the launch of the TeachAIDS Telugu animations in Hyderabad was a huge success. APSACS distributed more than 25,000 copies of the materials into schools, counselling facilities, and hospitals. The animations were shown widely on television, including on Doordarshan and MAA TV. Indian icons and world class experts joined together to present the research and importance of culturally appropriate education. The star-studded event commenced with a speech by activist and actress Amala Akkineni, and included speeches by Nagarjuna and Anushka Shetty, among others. The event received wide media coverage, and the exclusive list of attendees included 150 govt. officials, heads of NGOs, and select members of the press.

Quotes

When I first learned about this research-driven approach, it was clear that using animated characters was an innovative way to communicate simple biological concepts around virus transfer to people of all ages. I am proud to be part of the TeachAIDS movement and am confident that many people around the world will benefit from their tireless efforts.

- Shabana Azmi
UN Goodwill Ambassador and Former Indian Parliamentarian

“It was not too long ago that HIV-positive children were expelled from their schools due to a lack of basic HIV and AIDS knowledge. I am proud to be part of this groundbreaking initiative that will bring greater awareness to the masses,”

- Nagarjuna Akkinenni
